Tungsten ball – a highly versatile material for various applications

Tungsten carbide ball is particularly used where excessive hardness and wear resistance is required. It’s an ideally suitable material for applications like bearings, ball screws, valves, and flow meters. These balls are most commonly used for coins and as pivots to detent and tip the gauges and tracers. The Tungsten ball itself is immensely strong and inert. Any attack is often on the binder. Since other materials are comparatively less expensive, but it’s always preferred to select the tungsten carbide for its corrosion resistance.

From raw material to final inspection – How is the tungsten ball made?

Heading a ball – The raw material is supplied from the wire. It’s then cut to length however the width is slightly larger than the finished ball. The wire is then fed through a header. This entire process produces slugs at an exceptionally high speed.

Flashing – It’s the process of removing the ring that’s placed around the slug. The flashing helps in giving your ball a rough finish.

Heat treating a ball- Once the entire flashing process is completed, the ball is then treated with the heat. This high-temperature process helps in hardening the ball.

Grinding a ball – After heating the ball properly, the ball is then grinded to the approximate diameter of the finished ball.

Lapping a ball – Once the ball is grinded to its optimum size the balls are then lapped properly. This lapping process helps in polishing the ball to the exact size requirement. This helps in giving the ball a shiny finish.

Final inspection of balls – Once the balls are removed from the lapping process, the balls are then inspected. This is done both, mechanically and visually. They are measured with a digital micrometer. These devices can measure within the exact specifications. Once they are approved by the quality control department, the balls are then packaged and shipped to interested consumers.
